About a year ago I completed my certificate in Dog Grooming at Pet Stylist Academy on the Gold Coast, this is where I have gained some knowledge in what works best and where to buy these items.
If you are a dog owner who grooms their dog at home, these professional dog grooming supplies will help you get the best results, given that they are used correctly.
There is a very wide range of dog brushes and with each style aimed at a particular purpose it can get a little overwhelming knowing which one/s you’ll actually need most.
Let’s just stick to the basics and talk about slicker and fine tooth combs.
Slicker brushes are a must have in your list of dog grooming supplies, these are great for picking up loose hair in the coat, getting knots out and catching muck out of the coat as well. I use this brush the most because it’s almost an all in one, but you must be mindful not to brush the same spot continuously as the teeth on this type of brush can irritate your dogs skin.
Although it technically not a brush combs go hand in hand with brushes when grooming your dog. The slicker brush is great but having a comb that’s half fine toothed and the other half big toothed just gives that extra help when removing knots. Alongside the slicker brush this is my second most used dog grooming tool, going over your dogs coat with this comb to get if not all, most of the knots out of their coat. It just makes it easier on your dogs coat and skin if you don’t have to use the slicker brush for too long.
You can get these items from most pet stores in store and anywhere online although, depending on the brand name and durability of these tools the costs will vary roughly between $15 – $60.
Learning about dog grooming I understand how it is important to have a good set of professional clippers as these make it a lot easier to clipper through a dogs fur. But also to help aid in clipping a dogs fur you want them to have a nice clean coat otherwise the natural oils in a dogs coat make it difficult to catch the fur laying close to the skin.
Again these prices vary and you’d want to buy a set of clippers from a dog grooming specific shop, most of these shops can be accessed online too which makes it even easier for you to get your hands on a pair.
The Wahl brand was popular at the grooming school I went to and is what I used so I feel this is a reliable brand to look into for clippers. I’ve found that these can range between $150 – $220 and if you keep an eye out for sales you can get them cheaper.
While I was completing my dog grooming coast on the Gold Coast our group of 4 was taken to a dog grooming supply store which is where I purchased my set of scissors. Having yourself professional grooming scissors makes a world of difference when cutting a dogs coat, you can really tell the difference from a cheap pair of scissors once you’ve handled some professional dog grooming scissors.
After coming back from dog grooming school and I used the cheap pet scissors my mum had bought to use on her dog I could really feel the difference between her scissors and my newly purchased professional dog grooming scissors. I purchased mine from a dog grooming supply shop in the Gold Coast which unfortunately for this post I cannot remember the name of. But my advice on buying a pair of dog scissors is to physically go into a dog grooming supply store and hold them in your hand, it’s the best way to know you’ll feel comfortable holding them and while you are there you can add these rubber inserts on the inside of the finger holes to make it an even better fit for you.
I paid $452 for my set of three dog grooming scissors which included your standard straight edge scissor, curved scissor and a thinning scissor. You can purchase some that are less than this amount and you can also pay more, it all depends on your budget and what you’ll be doing with them. You may only buy one scissor and that will cost you around $150 again depending on what quality you are looking at.
If you have a dog grooming supply store near you I would still suggest going in and get a feel of the scissors before purchasing, but if you can only have access to online shopping read up on the reviews for that specific brand and style of scissor before purchasing. This is just to ensure you will be buying the most appropriate pair.
Back to the basics, if you don’t want to get splattered with water when washing a dog it is a great idea to wear a smock, these help keep the water from soaking into your clothes leaving that wet dog smell out of your clothes. These come in many lengths so you can choose to have one that covers at or below your hips.
These dog grooming smocks can be quite inexpensive ranging between $14 – $50 and if they’re on sale that’s even better. When I purchased a smock for myself I ended up buying the size up from what I thought I would be, just because for me having a loose fitting smock allowed me to still move around and it covers a bit more.
Another item is face masks, if you want to protect your lungs from breathing in your dog hair this is a great way to help avoid that. You can buy a disposable mask whether it is from a pet shop or a hardware store, they do the same thing so you don’t need to stress on where you get these from. If you want a reusable face mask with some colour A pet supply store should have some options for you.
A face mask will cost around $8 – $31 depending on where you purchased and if any sale prices are shown.
The grooming tool that makes a lot of us squirm. Whilst completing my dog grooming course I used two sizes of nail clippers, one for smaller dogs and the other for your bigger dogs. If you are game to clip your own dogs nails you can find these nail clippers in any pet store, if you’re searching online you will have no problem at all.
I Would suggest that you only clip your dogs nails if you have the knowledge on how to do so. You don’t want to cut it too short to the quick but it needs to be short enough that the quick will not grow out further. You can be gentle but at the same time you need to be in control and confident.
A pair of these will cost you around $8 – $22 keeping into consideration the size and model.
Where To Go From Here
Now that you have an idea of what you can use and you don’t need to use all of these, choose what you are comfortable using and focus on that grooming style.
If you want to gain some education in dog grooming you don’t have to go to a grooming school, there are heaps of videos and blogs out there that you can look at and you can teach yourself from there. The hardest thing to learn would be using the clippers to shave your dogs fur, this one you may want a face to face demonstration if looking online isn’t enough.
All the best with your home dog grooming, hope you enjoyed this read.
